Hammer Tournament XIV – Championship 2nd Half
Welcome back. Yesterday when we left off Central Missouri (UCM) had built a commanding lead against the Kansas City Chiefs (KC). The last time UCM lead the Hammer Bowl at half time was in 2011 when UCM lead Oklahoma 10 to 0 at half time but ended up losing the game when OU scored 21 unanswered points in the 2nd half.
Although KC is trailing they have played one heck of a game. There were a couple of plays that if they had gone slightly a different way then we could be looking at a completely different score right now. Remember at the end of the 1st quarter of the Semifinal game between KC and OU that KC trailed at the end of the 1st quarter and came back to win 11 to 10.
Let’s begin the second half of Hammer Bowl XIV. When we left off UCM had just scored the 2nd touchdown of the game after converting a 4th and long to make it 13 to 3. A blocked extra point has kept the potential win in sight for KC but only if they can get something going in this second half.
What is truly amazing that in a game of this magnitude, and with the fans this fired up, there has been exactly zero penalties. Not even an off sides call was called during that first half.
Both teams begin the 2nd half determined to make things happen. KC will get the ball. KC’s First drive of the half ends with a punt. UCM fields the punt at the 30 yard line. A quick juke to the left and a couple of missed tackles and the UCM punt returner crosses the goal line for another touchdown. A holding penalty, the first penalty of the game, erases the touchdown.
Powerful defenses by both KC and UCM keep the others offense from scoring for the remainder of the 3rd quarter.
UCM 13, KC 3, end of 3rd quarter.
On the 3rd play of the final quarter UCM’s quarterback gets sacked and there is a skirmish on the field, a little shoving and talking but nothing more. A sideline warning is issued to both teams.
Suddenly unable to make anything happen, UCM punts the ball away with less than 5 minutes left in the game. We are coming down to KC’s final opportunity to get some points on the board to close this game up. At 1st and 10 from their own 40 yard line KC begins to chip away at UCM’s defense and begins to gain 5-8 yards per carry. Little by little KC marches down the field. Finally the Chiefs enter filed goal range, the first time either team has done this in the 2nd half. Alex Smith completes a pass to the right side and suddenly it is 1st and goal from the UCM 5 yard line.
Faking a pass Alex Smith hands the ball off and it’s a run up the middle for KC’s first touchdown of the game.
UCM 13, KC 9
The extra point is good.
UCM 13, KC 10, 2:00 remaining in this game.
Ladies and gentlemen, I believe we have ourselves a ball game. KC needs to force a turn over here if they are going to have any opportunity to win this game. On the ensuing kickoff KC kicks it deep. The UCM return man bobbles the ball but hangs on. He cuts to the 20, he gets the 30, he’s down the sideline at the 40, he crosses the 50. It’s looking like this game is over as it appears UCM is about to score the game clincher. Suddenly the ball carrier is hit hard and the ball pops up in the air. A KC player recovers the ball in midair and runs toward midfield. It’s a fumble that is recovered by KC. With 90 seconds remaining KC has the opportunity to win this game. 50 yards in 90 seconds and only one 1 time out. A field is all KC needs to send this game into overtime.
1st and 10 from the 50 yard line. Alex Smith hands the ball off and it’s a run along the right sideline. He is hit out of bounds at the 45 yard line.
2nd and 5 from the 45 yard line. It’s another run up the sideline but this time the running back does not get out of bounds and the clock is still running.
3rd and 2 from the 42 yard line. The clock dips below 60 seconds. Alex Smith takes the snap and drops back. He throws it. It’s complete for 12 yards and the receiver is immediately downed. The clock is going to start as soon as the ball is set. KC is officially in field goal range.
1st and 10 from the 30 yard line. This time Smith is sacked on the play and now the Chiefs are just outside of field goal range.
2nd and 15 from the 35 yard line. 45 seconds remaining. KC’s quarterback executes a run up the middle. It looks like the Chiefs a trying to go to overtime.
3rd and 5 from the 25 yard line. 20 seconds remaining and Alex Smith calls the final time out of the game.
This is it. A field goal here and we will go to overtime. A stop here and Central Missouri will win their first Hammer Bowl.
The place kicker takes the snap. The hold looks good. Here is the kick. HE HOOKED IT! THE KICK IS NO GOOD! CENTRAL MISSOURI WINS! CENTRAL MISSOURI WINS! It looks like the Chiefs kicker did not kick the ball squarely. And that’s it ladies and gentlemen. For only the second time in Hammer Bowl history a team other than Oklahoma has won the Hammer Bowl.
Congratulations to Central Missouri for winning Hammer Bowl XIV.
My next post will be my annual Champion of Champions Tournament where I matchup the NCAA DI Champions, the NCAA DII Champions, the Junior College Champions, the NFL Super Bowl Champions, & the Hammer Bowl Champions in a 5 team, single elimination tournament. That post will be my final post for the 2014-2015 Sports Season.
