Hammer Tournament XIV – Semifinal 1 2nd Half
The 2nd half begins and Oklahoma is clearly not the same team they were in the 1st half. In the 3rd quarter alone Oklahoma finds their way into the red zone a total of 5 times but all 5 drives end with a missed field goal, a running back fumble on the 10 yard line, a blocked field goal, a quarterback sack that results in a fumble, and an intercepted pass. The good news for Oklahoma is that none of their turnovers result in the Chiefs scoring.
With only seconds remaining in the 3rd quarter OU does manage to score a field goal to regain the lead.
OU 10, KC 8
This has been a surprisingly close game. We were expecting a good game for the first time OU and KC met in the Hammer Tournament but I don’t think anyone expected this low of scoring.
The 4th quarter is a defensive clinic as both teams keep the ball between the 35 yard lines. With 2:00 remaining the Chiefs receive a deep punt by Oklahoma and the punt returner returns the ball to the 50 yard line. The crowd is on their feet as it appears that this drive will most likely be the final drive of the game. OU will have to keep KC outside of the 30 yard line if they are looking to prevent a potential game winning field goal.
1st and 10 from the 50. Alex Smith drops back and throws a pass to the side line. The pass is complete and the receiver is immediately knocked out of bounds at the 45.
2nd and 5 from the 45. Oklahoma’s defense steps up and sacks the quarterback.
3rd and 10 from the 50. A 10 yard pass is complete and KC converts a 3rd down.
1st and 10 from the 40, 60 seconds remaining. 10 yards from field goal range and KC runs up the middle for 5 yards.
2nd and 5 from the 35, 50 seconds remaining. Alex Smith drops back and is forced to scramble away from an OU defender. He cuts to the right, he is immediately swarmed by crimson jerseys. Amazingly he spins out of a potential sack and cuts back across the field to the left. He is desperately trying to find an open receiver. OU’s defensive line is preventing any type of quarterback keeper. Smith leaps as he throws and actually throws the ball across the field and against the grain. IT’S COMPLETE! At the 25. The ball carrier is immediately hit but managers to gain another 5 yards before OU can tackle him.
1st and 10 from the 20, 25 seconds remaining. The ball is placed on the right hash mark. It’s a run to the left as the Chiefs are setting up a potential game winning field goal.
This is it. We could be witnessing only the 2nd Oklahoma Hammer Tournament loss in the tournaments 14 year history. It has all come down to this play, this field goal.
OU ices the kicker with a time out. After the time out KC and OU line up and are ready. The snap is good, the hold is good, here is the kick. It has the distance and it looks true. IT’S GOOD. The Chiefs have taken the lead with the clock showing 4 seconds remaining in the game.
OU 10, KC 11
OU’s attempt to make anything happen on the ensuing kickoff return is dashed. The OU returner is tackled near midfield as the clock now shows zero. The Kansas City Chiefs have upset Oklahoma at Norman. Kansas City advances to their first Hammer Bowl (Championship) ever. And not only will Oklahoma not win only the Hammer Tournament Championship but they won’t even be competing in the Championship round for the first time ever.
Tomorrow we will see who Kansas City will be competing against in the Hammer Bowl. The winner of tomorrow’s Semifinal game, either Central Missouri or Northeastern Oklahoma A&M will face the Chiefs in the Championship.
